Deeper Faster Further Warmer (a holiday greeting) // The Presets

Enough of Christmas. Enough of insanely unhealthy pastry. Enough of crammed packed shopping malls with Santas and Elves on minimum wage. Enough of soulless mass text messaging.

Enough of frantic longing.

I just want to take all of you out and have a good time. Anywhere.

Videorama // Vitalic

Track taken from the album Flashmob.
Built around the cover's picture of Vitalic's album Flashmob, this video clip is an oniric and contemplative journey of a man recreating the 19th century experience of Etienne-Jules Marey on fluid dynamics.
Smoke lines represent the notion of stability, the triangle goes for the disturbance and incidentally for the V of Vitalic. The concept of a flashmob is illustrated here as a result of an intruder perturbating a stable environment.

I'll tell you about punk rock:

punk rock is a word used by dillitantes and ah... and ah... heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds of young men who give what they have to it and give everything they have to it and it's a... it's a term that's based on contempt, it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock'n'roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten but I'm sure... I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius, myself . And that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my control and ah... when I'm in the grips of it I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever felt like that? When you just couldn't feel anything and you didn't want to either. You know? Like that? Do you understand what I'm saying sir?

Videorama // The Sound of Arrows + Little Big Adventure

Hard and cold times are upon us. To help keep the freezing temperatures away, two heartfelt gems - one brimming with hope the other not so much - from the land of feel-good ultra empowering synth pop, Sweden. Oh, the irony... (don't forget to click the freebie links below to download these tracks from their label, Labrador)

First off, The Sound of Arrows with a *gorgeous* video for their most recent single Into the clouds: A fantasy dreamscape, reminiscent of Never Ending Story and other fantasy movies from the 80s. I miss those blurry colours. No lucky dragon as well, guess that would have made it too obvious.

A murderous tale // The Cat Piano with Nick Cave

Via AstroBoy™. Check his blog for more details.

The Cat Piano from PRA on Vimeo.

The Cat Piano by Eddie White

Long ago my city’s luminous heart, beat with the song of four thousand cats.
Crooners who shone in the moonlight mimicry of the spotlight.
Jazz singers. Hip cats that went ‘Scat!’
Buskers with open-mouthed hats hungry for a feed.
Parlours paraded purring glamorous songstresses.
Smoky hookahs and smoking hookers.
Strays strummed string and sung a cocktail of cat’s tails.
A decadent party of meowing sound.
A bohemian behemoth, post-midnight soiree.

Amongst the chorale ‘o tuneful ones was one fair queen who drew me from o’er the way.
Her fur, an amorous white and a voice that made all the angels of eternity sound tone deaf.
Blind with love at first sight, touched by the taste of her sound,
I longed to be the microphone she cradled near her breast.

‘Twas our Shang-ri-la of sound,
A paradise found where nothin’ could stop us.
Or so it seemed.

Singers began to vanish like sailors lost at sea.
Snatched from stage alley way
Shanghai’d from behind scarlet curtain.
Into thin air they disappeared without a single cry.
Police study the clues.
Foot-prints from human shoes.

So you’ve heard of every instrument but?
Torn from your history books is this pianola,
This harpsichord of harm.
The cruellest instrument to spawn from man’s grey cerebral soup.
The Cat Piano.

Confined were the cats in a row of cages.
With each note struck upon it’s ivory tusks,
A sharpened nail would pierce each cat’s tail,
Forcing a note from each pitch on the scale.

I ran my cursed writer’s run to tell her beware.
She wasn’t there.
My soul capsized.
Like a fish, paralysed.
On a chopping board, its spinal cord ripped forth from its body,
Her vocals the last the thief had needed,
A rare celestial pitch that would complete his collection.

The city in unrest.
Fights broke out in its sleep.
I couldn’t dream anymore.
There was a hole in my heart and everything fell out of it.
All music forbidden.
Keep your lullabies hidden.
And your A and E minors off the street after dark.

My town grew cold and bitter.
In icy hibernation was the once thumping heart.
Now seizing up.
Freezing up.

The torturous worm of sound burrowed deep into my ears.
Le Piano du chat
I thought of Van Gogh.
Neko Piano.
I’d put an end to this incessant, inescapable drone.
Mao Gang Qin

I enlisted an army of the brave and I their general declared war.
Poised with tooth and fire in paw.
We would finally settle this musical score.
Eyes with fierce intent that glowed.
Through tempestuous waters we rowed.
Storming the shores,
Swarming in scores,
Scaling its walls with well-sharpened claws,
We invaded the tower through all its doors.

Up the winding stairs,
To meet him with blinding stares.
There he sat.
The organ grinder.

He turned, we pounced, we scratched and bit.
He stumbled.
Fell through the window.
Screaming into the indigo waters below.

We freed the chain gang from their jail.
Cremated the piano.
And for home we set sail.

The city had reclaimed its vestal muse.
It would live again.
Beat again.
Cats would sing in the street again.
And I in anonymity as I had been long before this soliloquy,
Could sit and listen from afar.
The Cat Piano, now a healed over wound.
And this ode its fading scar.

No-Rain Dance is a go-go! (murder is also on the menu)

Totally psyched to go see Kap Bambino later on. So much so that checking out brand new soft la-la-la luminaries Beach House or lets-do-a-side-project-that-sounds-just-like-the-main-one Little Joy seems schizophrenic, so might skip that. Plan B involves check them out and getting hammered by the time that Caroline and Orion hit the stage.

Oh, and did I mention that the show is going to be in an underground club in a parking lot? How very befitting indeed. I sense a shit-storm of Crystal Castles proportions brewing.

Humm... 8-bitcovertuesday??? // The gameboy Magnetic Fields cover

Ok, so I just remembered this song a couple of minutes ago. While taking a shower.

(wait, in gets weirder... but not *that* kind of weird)

I first crossed paths with Tom Milson aka hexacordal a couple of months back via gaZpar, who on it's turn met Tom via... Trent Reznor. Yes, the now muscle ripped dude from Nine Inch Nail. So, what have we got here? We have a emo and barely legal looking hipster kid covering The Magnetics Fields. Electronic version. On a gameboy.

I mean, what is there *not* to love?

If multi-instrumentalist ukelele inclined young overachievers is your thing, be sure to checkout his second album, Painfully Mainstream.

PS: The name of his first album was even more awesome Awkward Ballads For The Easily-Pleased

PPS: Now why oh why did I remembered this while taking a shower? Seriously, I worry... about myself.

The exes and the pluses // Florence + XX

Some bands are slanted to turn everything that they touch into pure gold and that seems to be the case for the XX. Either due to some extreme hyping from musical behemoths such NME & Pitchfork or just because, you know, they actually sound good, the XX have been one of this blog's favorites for 2009. Point in case: Florence + The Machine remix, or the bland innocuous garden variety British teen soul songstress flavour of the year 2009 getting turned on it's head and sounding a million times that much more refreshing.

XX: Believe the hype! Download this track here, listen to it over and over, put it as your ring tone, share it with your friends and say you're doing it because you love them, share it with your enemies and say you're doing it because their musical taste needs an intervention, just pass the word.
